The Scooter

The Batsman has been cautious about wheely toys, trikes and bikes, since ever.
Any physical activity where he might get the sensation of not being in complete control of his body and his movement, and he pauses, often flinches and walks away. Sometimes he will avoid it all together.
He is a cautious climber, watching where his feet and hands go, monitoring every little movement.
Yet when his body and mind are in "sensory seeking" mode he can throw himself around with abandon, jump on the couch, roll across a swiss ball. Go figure.
.
It has bruised my heart to watch him go from being a bub who loved being on a swing, giggling with delight, to the cautious toddler who said "no mummy, no". It has taken lots and lots of encouragement to get him back on a swing, first on his belly so he could control the ground beneath him with his feet and now, ever so hesitantly sitting on the swing and propelling himself back and forth. Maybe one day he will let me push him.

Scooters and trikes have been a similar story until recently. I've been reluctant to spend big dollars on items like this with the risk of them having little use so when we were offered a second hand scooter a few weeks ago, we happily accepted.

And this boy, this beautiful boy who just keeps on astonishing us with his capacity to gather new skills and let us glimpse his talents, mastered the scooter in just two days. We just had to celebrate the newly found confidence and skills with a trip to beautiful gardens, with autumn leaves, peeking sunshine and wide scooter friendly paths.

And this is what he did.

He looks pretty pleased with himself doesn't he.
Onwards my son.
