Smooth talking - a speech update

You might recall that out of the blue, back in August, the Batsman began to stutter. It began with little stutters and stumbles but quickly escalated to significant difficulties. It came from nowhere. In his first assessment for the stuttering with a speechie, she took a sample of his speech and he stuttered in almost fifty percent of words. That is a huge number and incredibly worrying in terms of the impact it would have on his blossoming social skills leading into school next year. Other children began to notice and comment on his “funny talking” but thankfully his increasing awareness of it hasn’t stopped his attempts to communicate.

We were fortunate to find a fluency specialist who has worked with him and us over the last couple of months using the Lidcombe method. It has been amazing. If you want to know more about the treatment method and how it works, go here.

Fast forward two months to our latest visit with the specialist and his speech sample yielded stutters in only 11% of words. The speech is getting smoother each day. So we know the therapy is working and we are getting there.

There is relief in the air around our place this week.
