Together we are stronger

If you read here every now and then, you know this boy. If you are a new visitor to The I Love You Song, then please meet The Batsman. He is 5. Our first born son. Brother of The Bowler. The Batsman has autism.

Since his diagnosis in March 2010 and the beginning of his intensive therapy program, I have regularly struggled with the sense and reality of isolation. I have very often been physically isolated by the practicalities of running a therapy program in our own home. And so very often I have felt emotionally isolated because what we are dealing with as a family is different. Most of the "before" friends have stuck with us, some have drifted away. Different.

The online connections I have made through blogging and Twitter have, quite literally, saved me many times. Amazing women, those with kids on the spectrum and those with kids developing typically, who have given me the wonderful gift of listening ears, support and friendship. These connections, in many instances, have crossed over now, beyond the internet and into my life and my heart. And my goodness it makes a difference. You know who you are. Thank you.

For the last month or so, I have had the extraordinary privilege of working with Kate, Marita, Renee and Twitchy to bring a very special project to fruition. Autism: In Our Own Words is our way of trying to reach out and bring people together as they face the very real isolation that an autism diagnosis can bring. Already, we have been amazed by the response and the sheer number of people looking to connect and be a part of building an online community. Together. Stronger.

I will be a regular contributor at Autism: In Our Own Words and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of it. If you haven't already, please visit us at the site and subscribe, or like us on FB or follow us on Twitter

Together. Stronger.
