What are you doing? An autism awareness film.

Tonight the Captain and I went to see the Melbourne premiere of this film.

"What are you doing?" is a film designed to help kids aged 8 - 15 understand what autism is and what it means to have it. Told by the siblings and friends of kids on the spectrum, "What are you doing?" aims to support the participation of kids with autism in mainstream education settings by creating an environment and a peer group who "get it" and can support and include them.

Twenty two minutes long, the film gives an insight into what autism is like through the eyes of young people close to it. It is direct and straight forward, moving and funny and most of all, I genuinely believe it will help create more tolerant mainstream school environments for our beautiful children with autism spectrum disorder.

As the parent of a beautiful Batsman boy with autism, I am thrilled this film has been made. I am even more thrilled that the film will play a significant role in World Autism Day celebrations across the globe in 2012. This little Aussie film is about to pack a big, important global punch.

It is coming soon to a school near you so look out for it.

Resuming normal transmission.......now.

  1. I investigated taking Boy 1 to the Brissie premier, but then decided against it. It is hard to strike that balance of being aware and being self-conscious about having ASD.
