It's your song buddy
One of the reasons why I love this blog, the Batsman's blog, is that it is a place where I can record those fleeting little moments of sweetness, of his development, of the pure joy of being this kid's mum. I love it that there is a place where I (and eventually the Batsman) will be able to look back and reminisce.
For a long time, singing in the car has been a complete "no" from the Batsman's point of view. Sensory sensitivity has meant that whenever I began to sing along with a CD or the radio in the car, the Batsman would cry (when he was younger) or say "stop it please mummy" (as an older boy). Over time I had gotten used to listening to ABC Kids or the Night Garden playing in the car, but with no singing. It made me sad because I love a bit of a car sing.
Lately I have been trying occasionally to play some other music softly in the car as a way of gradually desensitising the Batsman to the sounds and other sensory input. I have begun to hum a little too. Both, over a period of a few weeks, have met with little or no Batsman resistance. This week I played some Elton John in the car on the long drive back from our therapy team meeting. I sang along softly.
I stopped at the traffic lights and turned to look back at my boy. He was singing along....the "laaaaaa, la la la la la" part of Elton John's Crocodile Rock no less.
My heart sang too.
This is for you my beautiful boy.
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world (Elton John, 1970)
Just what I needed to read after this week. Tears in my eyes, so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to add, when they get older you can use it to bug them. Yes, I am that sort of mum (makes them laugh).
ReplyDeleteWhen we are late I sing "I like to move it, move it..." until the hysterical cries of MUUUUUUM make me stop.
Oh dear, sniff sniff.
