In case you don't remember

My precious boy. My lovely eldest son.

You did it. You completed your first full week at primary school. There were no tears (from you), only smiles and eagerness as you ran across the playground with your gangly limbs flailing like an oversized puppy. In case you don’t remember, here is what I want you to know about your first week at primary school.

You got dressed in your school uniform by yourself every day and managed your socks and shoes.

You walked to school carrying a bag that seems like it is heavier and bigger than you while I tried to work out how to reduce the load of lunchbox and drink bottles.

You turned 6 years old and your favourite gift was a very funky pair of orange headphones that I chose for you. Your birthday cake was decorated with your current obsessions of Bob the Builder and the colour orange.

You walked into the school on that first day and said hello to so many of the new people at your school.  You reserved your most enthusiastic greeting for your friend who has been by your side since you were both six weeks old.

You played in the great big playground at recess and lunchtime amongst the crowds of kids and the noise. So many people told me how happy you were.

You ate your lunch on three days and you didn’t eat it on two. It matters not as you continue to grow like a weed.

You lost a front tooth. What a beautiful big gappy grin.

You made me prouder than I could ever have believed is possible.
